Remote video and real visitation

Prison Policy Initiative's Winnable Criminal Justice Reforms in 2026 warns that some jails have used video-calling technology to replace in-person visitation. The organization supports policies that maintain physical visits while allowing video calling as an additional communication option.

Different rules in different places

States and counties have distinct rules for visitor approval, appointments, contact, security and fees. The report cites reforms adopted in several states, but those policies do not establish what Georgia, Alabama or Florida facilities currently allow. A local story requires actual written jail rules and responses from administrators.

A useful family checklist

Before traveling, confirm the visit type, approved visitor list, identification, scheduling requirements, cancellation policy and disability accommodation. Keep receipts and dated correspondence if an expected visit is denied. Specific records allow fair comparison without assuming a constitutional claim.
