The Prison Project Civic Accountability Network is a new initiative designed to help ordinary citizens become informed, engaged, and effective participants in their communities.
We believe accountability begins with knowledge.
Many Americans want to make a difference but do not know where to start. They may not understand how local government works, how public records can be obtained, how public meetings operate, or how community concerns can be documented and addressed.
The Civic Accountability Network exists to bridge that gap.
Our mission is simple:
Observe. Document. Verify. Communicate. Participate.
We are creating a growing network of Community Correspondents across the country who are committed to learning about their communities, documenting local issues, and helping citizens become more informed and engaged.
Starting in New Mexico
The first Community Correspondent in the program is Justine Mendez of Silver City, New Mexico.
Justine's role is not to act as a politician, activist, or professional journalist.
Her role is to learn, investigate, document, and share information that helps her community better understand the issues affecting local citizens.
Working alongside Prison Project and local contributors, Justine will help develop ongoing community accountability projects focused on Grant County and surrounding communities.
Current Community Projects
The Grant County Tear Gas Incident
Examining what occurred during the detention center gas exposure incident, what happened afterward, and whether any policy changes resulted from the event.
Life on Probation in Grant County
Exploring how probation, parole, electronic monitoring, and community supervision impact local residents and families.
Who Is Actually In The Grant County Jail?
Understanding who is being housed in the detention center, where inmates come from, and how the facility operates within the broader correctional system.
Where Does Jail Funding Come From?
Examining fines, fees, contracts, corrections funding, and other financial mechanisms that support detention operations.
A New Way To Build Community Accountability
Unlike traditional media, these projects will begin as living community files.
Each project will have its own dedicated page where documents, timelines, interviews, updates, research notes, and community information can be collected as the investigation develops.
These pages will allow contributors, researchers, and community members to follow a story from beginning to end.
As facts are verified and investigations mature, completed projects may be developed into formal articles, reports, educational resources, or advocacy initiatives.
Training The Next Generation
The Civic Accountability Network is not limited to New Mexico.
Our long-term goal is to create Community Correspondents in towns and counties across America.
Participants will learn:
• How local government works
• How to document issues responsibly
• How to build timelines and case files
• How to conduct interviews
• How to verify information
• How to submit public records requests
• How to communicate effectively with their communities
Most importantly, they will learn how to become informed citizens who understand both their rights and their responsibilities.
