Every week, people come to Prison Project asking essentially the same question:
They may be fighting for someone who is incarcerated. They may be trying to bring attention to a wrongful conviction, a death in custody, prison conditions, medical neglect, parole, clemency, family separation, government accountability, or another injustice.
They have documents. They have photographs. They have a story. They may have spent months—or years—posting on social media.
But they don’t have a central place where everything comes together.
That’s why Prison Project created Stand With Them.
From a Story to an Advocacy Platform
Stand With Them is Prison Project’s personal advocacy program designed to help ordinary people build a professional public presence around a person, case, cause, or movement.
Instead of sending someone a dozen TikTok videos, screenshots and Google Drive links, you can send them one link.
That page can become the public home for your advocacy.
Depending on the project, your page can include:
- The person’s story and case background
- Photographs and video
- Important dates and a case timeline
- Court and public documents
- News and media coverage
- Calls to action
- Petitions and campaigns
- Contact and supporter information
- Links to social media
- Updates as the campaign develops
- Ways supporters can help
The goal is simple:
Help visitors quickly understand what happened, why it matters, and what you want them to do next.
Advocacy Shouldn’t Require Being a Web Developer
One of the things we’ve learned from working with families is that people often know their case extraordinarily well.
What they don’t necessarily know is how to build a website, register a domain, organize hundreds of documents, create graphics, write for the internet, build an email list, manage digital marketing, or turn scattered advocacy into an organized campaign.
Stand With Them is our response.
We can start small with an advocacy page hosted through PrisonProject.net and build from there.
And “from there” can go a long way.
More Than a Page
Some people need one strong advocacy page.
Others are trying to build something much bigger.
For those projects, Prison Project can provide additional development and consulting services as the campaign grows.
Custom Domain Registration and Setup
Establish a permanent internet address for your campaign, movement, organization or cause.
Independent Website Development
Move beyond a Prison Project advocacy page into your own standalone website.
WordPress or Drupal Development
We help choose technology based on your skills, goals and expected growth instead of forcing every project into the same system.
Website Management and Training
Learn how to update and operate the system we build so you aren’t permanently dependent on someone else.
Digital Marketing Infrastructure
Build the pieces needed to reach people beyond your existing social-media audience.
Email Lists and Supporter Development
Followers are useful. A list of people who have specifically asked to hear from your movement is an asset you control.
Donation and Payment Infrastructure
Help evaluating and setting up appropriate systems for receiving financial support as your campaign grows.
Nonprofit Development Roadmap
Help understanding the organizational, technological and professional steps that may be needed as a movement becomes more formal.
Branding and Campaign Development
Names, messaging, calls to action, graphics and a consistent public identity.
Document and Evidence Organization
Turn years of scattered materials into a public record people can actually understand while separating sensitive information that should remain private.
Content and Search Development
Create articles and resources that give people reasons to discover, follow and return to your campaign.
Media and Outreach Infrastructure
Press pages, public statements, media resources, contact systems and materials for journalists and potential partners.
Advocacy Strategy
Turn “somebody needs to do something” into specific goals, audiences, actions and measurable results.
Start With What You Have
You don’t need a nonprofit organization.
You don’t need a giant following.
You don’t need a $10,000 website.
And you don’t need everything figured out before you begin.
You need a story worth telling, a legitimate purpose, and the willingness to do the work.
Stand With Them gives you a place to start.
Your first advocacy page can become the foundation. As your campaign develops, the technology and organization can develop with it.
Some projects may remain a single page forever.
Others may eventually become independent websites, organized campaigns, advocacy networks or nonprofit organizations.
We built Stand With Them because the people who came to Prison Project asked us to teach them how to advocate better.
This is part of our answer.
